                     Westside Library Information     2009 - 2010

Welcome to Westside School Library from Donna McCrory, Westside’s library teacher.  Everyone calls me Miss Donna.  This will be the 18th year I have been the librarian and my 23rd year to teach at Westside.  My husband, Andy Scruggs, teaches 8th grade at Macon County Junior High School.

Students in grades 1 and 5 will check out books on Tuesday of each week.  Students in grades 2, 3, and 4 will check out books on Wednesday of each week.  Kindergarten students will check out books after Christmas on Tuesday of each week.  We call the day we check out and return books “book day”.   Each student can check out one book for one week.  Overdue books are books not returned on book day by students present or absent.   Overdue books may be returned to my computer chair at any time.  Books may be checked out during a student’s class book day or during open check out time.  Open check out time is from 2:05 – 2:35 daily.  Students who missed checking out a book on book day or need another book may get one during open check out time.  No overdue fines will be charged unless a book is overdue for 4 weeks.  Fines will be charged for books that are damaged and any student who loses a book must pay to replace the book.  Fines can be paid in the library between 2:05 – 2:35 daily or on book day.  No student can check out a library book if they owe a fine or have an overdue book.  Students who transfer to Westside from another school may not get a library book until records are received and all debts are paid at the school last attended.  Please send a note if you do not want to be responsible for damages or lost library books and I will not allow your child get a library book.

When every student in the class who has a library book checked out returns it on book day, we say the class has no overdue books that day.  When a class has had no overdue books six times, that class will get extra time with me in the library.  If students will leave their library books at school the day before book day, then the books will be there on book day even if a student is absent.  This will help the class have no overdue books.  The students really enjoy extra time in the library.  Some teachers may require students to leave library books at school.

Students in grades K, 1, and 5 will go to the library on Thursday and students in grades 2, 3, and 4 will go to the library on Friday of each week for library skills.  Skills include lessons on book care, library organization, library references, stories, songs, films, puppets, and other activities related to books and libraries.

I look forward to helping your child select books and reading in the library this year.  Thank you for helping us keep our library books in good condition so we can all enjoy them longer.  Remember:  reading with children is the best way to improve their reading skills.

 Thank you,
